God by His Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, the master of temptation. Jesus was not born with The Holy Spirit inside and had to learn by the scripture that He was the Son of God and God the Son. Now by The Holy Spirit He was ready by faith to face the devil. The devil had the right to tempt Jesus to show God that man could not resist him, that God was no better than him if the circumstances were right and tempting enough. The devil wanted to show that God is not a fair God to Judge him the devil for the desire to be God from his position as an arc angel in heaven as was his heavenly rank.
Jesus had hunger and thirst and lusted for nutrition, He was probably tired and after 40 days and nights could not think clearly, and then a nice dressed person with an inviting smile, the devil in disguise came and offered Him food. The only thing Jesus had to do was talking to the stones around Him turning them into bread, “that is if you are The Son of God”. However, by faith in His father Jesus knew that He was the Son of God and did not have to prove it, the scripture was enough for Him, there He found the story about Himself, there it was, everything that happened to Him. And the Words of God is enough for us too.
YHWH, His name
Jesus told the devil about another substance than food to live by, the Words that proceeds from the mouth of God and at the same time told us that every word in the Bible is spoken of God, Jesus cited Deuteronomy 8:3 the last part of it, that man, you and me do not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of YHWH. In Matthew Jesus used the word Theou for God, however He cited from the Old Testament, from Deuteronomy 8:3 where Moses used the word YHWH for God reflecting His name.
Now Jesus had been tested by His body’s primary needs, water and food and He passed the test by the Words of God. Now the devil tempted His need to show His status and position as God from the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem. And the devil quoted the Bible, from Psalm 91:11-12 that is he tried to quote, however missed, he left out a vital part, “to keep thee in all thy ways” the devil left out the reason why the angles should lift Jesus up by their hands, for Him to be kept in all His ways fulfilling God’s purpose on earth.
Not mammon but Jesus
One dimension of tempting was left, the desire for material wealth on earth, to live in luxury and enjoy life to the full. Jesus had feelings and desires as you and me and the devil new that and took him up on a high mountain to view all the kingdoms and splendor in the world, this was the last dimension of temptation and the devil’s last opportunity to trap Jesus, to have Him worship him as God. However, Jesus knew that the devil had come to the end of the temptation-line and quoted Deuteronomy 6:16 and told him to leave, and the devil left Him, however stayed alert to tempt Jesus when an opportunity. Our only weapon against the devil is the Word of God, not to worship mammon but Jesus.
