ASV notes on Genesis 3:14-15

Because of what happened, that they disobeyed God they were all cursed, the serpent, the woman and Adam, this curse was automatic and God didn’t act furiously, He was calm and collected and explained the curse to them thoroughly, God is always fair.

The serpent was cursed, But God was actually talking to Satan, and God knew that Satan was the guilty one, but also the serpent had to pay for listening to the devil.  We are all responsible for our actions, it doesn’t help to blame someone else or circumstances. Jesus died for the whole world and is always available, there are no excuses. You can be poor, rich, fugitive, in prison, sick, without father and mother, doesn’t matter, Jesus is there for you.

In verse 15 God is talking about the woman and her seed and the devil. The woman is Eve and the seed is Jesus, what God said here is linking the whole Bible to Jesus, the connection between the Old and the New Testament. Eve is representing the world and the devil will “always” be there, stealing, killing and destroying, but Jesus stopped him on the cross and will finally beat him on the battlefield too.

ASV notes on Genesis 3:16-19

The curse on the woman came as a result of sin not because God was angry and wanted to punish her. God wanted everything good for His creation. God warned Adam that if they ate of the forbidden fruit they would die. The life is in the spirit in man; Adam was born with God’s spirit within.

To be alive is having the spirit of God, the same spirit as the spirit of Jesus. Having the spirit of God, Adam and Eve was in perfect harmony, they were both subdued to God and in that sense they were equal, the only difference was that Eve was made a helper to Adam, but as helper Eve was on the same level as Adam because they both had no sin and were subdued to God. They had God’s spirit and as long as the devil kept the distance they had no temptation to resist.

When Eve sinned her spirit lost the connection with the spirit of God, and the spiritual compass and map was gone, she died. Now she was not surrounded by the goodness of God, the struggle started. This doesn’t mean that God hated her, no God still loved her and looked after her, but the autopilot of goodness was gone, she now had to give birth to children in pain and her relation to man did change too, her longing would be for her husband and the husband would rule over her, they were no longer equal.

The curse of Adam was that the good days with God was over, now the struggle started, the soil to cultivate was not the same anymore, and it did not grow only the beneficial plants but weeds as well. Also sorrow and toil would be a part of his life from now on, Cain killed Abel, and Adam had become a slave in sorrow and pain. Finally Adam and Eve would die and go back to the dust that Adam was taken from. They were before the sin immortal; they would live for ever in harmony with God and fill the earth in goodness and glory.
